How Do You Become a Light to This Dark Time We Are Living In?

Light and Darkness met. “What do people find in you?” — exclaimed Darkness in surprise. “Neither beauty nor mystery — you just hurt one’s eyes!”

Light did not answer. It just politely stepped aside and silently illuminated the road because Darkness was heading toward an abyss without even seeing it.

Today, we experience an engulfing feeling of approaching an abyss and that there is no one to light the way. In order to become a light in this dark time we are living in, we only need mutual support and compassion.

In the above allegory, Light said nothing to Darkness, it simply stepped aside and illuminated the way. That is the property of the light, to shine on everyone no matter who they might be, including even the most harmful of criminals.

The meaning of light in this case is not in its physical meaning of photons that illuminate our retina, but a force of bestowal, compassion and connection. The condition for this light to spread from itself to all directions is specifically connection. If a compassionate and supportive connection is nonexistent, light — the force of bestowal — cannot conduct itself through matter — our inner desires and feelings.

Therefore, in order to light the way for others, we need to positively connect. Even if darkness appears to consume everyone in the world, we should remember that the positive connection of even a handful of people acts as a conduit of light to everyone. Those who wish to become a light in this dark time should thus aim to positively connect with others, and to also do so with a prior intention for their connection to shine for everyone.
