What Are the Benefits of Loneliness? Does It Make People Stronger?
Loneliness depends on how we perceive it and what we do with it. If we are alone and use this time to develop ourselves, to reflect and to understand life more deeply, then this can be very beneficial. In such a condition, we are unbounded by external obligations. We are free to structure our lives as we see fit, and we can use our time effectively for our personal growth.
However, not everyone is suited for this. Some people naturally seek family life, connection, and close relationships. They find fulfillment in being surrounded by others, in the responsibilities that come with family, and in raising children. Others, on the contrary, feel perfectly comfortable being alone and do not feel the need for constant social engagement.
We should understand that our egoistic nature — the desire to enjoy for self-benefit alone — is growing rapidly, and with it, our ability to tolerate and connect with others is diminishing. This is why we see more and more people choosing to live alone, and why even many in relationships feel alienated from each other.
But rather than judging this trend as good or bad, we should recognize it as part of humanity’s natural evolution. If we wish to improve our relationships — not just in marriage, but in all human interactions — the focus should not be on forcing people into traditional structures, but on elevating an atmosphere of positive human connection throughout society. This means rising above our egoism, and learning to connect in a way that is not based on personal gain but on mutual understanding and consideration.
The world today is increasingly structured for minimal interaction — everything is available online, from food delivery to remote work. This is another sign of how human nature is shifting. But the real question is: What is the purpose of connection between people?
In the wisdom of Kabbalah, we learn that connection between people is a means to rise above egoism and reveal a higher reality. What matters is whether we are using our relationships — whatever form they take — to reach a higher state of existence.
