What Does It Mean to Be Spiritually Dead?
Being spiritually dead means having no spirit. Spirit refers to the quality of bestowal upon others, not the quality of receiving from others.
Our earthly life is based on the desire to receive from everything around us, in every form, on still, vegetative, animate, and human levels.
Spiritual life, on the other hand, is when we do not take from outside, but give from within, when we try to share, help, and radiate outward.
If we change one life for the other then we discover what it means to be spiritually alive.
What Is the Secret of Immortality?
First, immortality is not about preserving the physical body, because the physical body does not actually exist. It exists only in our imagination, just like everything we perceive in this world. That is why the world is called “Olam” in Hebrew, from the word “Ne’elam” (hidden) and “Alama” (concealment). Our current existence is merely a shadowy state, a concealed reality in which we have not yet awakened to true life.
So how can we pass through these illusions, uncover real life, and achieve immortality? It is via transformation, not of the body, but of perception. Immortality is not about clinging to this temporary form of our corporeal bodies but about shifting our sense of self from within. It is the resurrection of a new awareness.
We begin this process when we no longer see life as existing within ourselves alone, but in others — when we begin to feel ourselves through others. The more we detach from self-concern and awaken to a reality beyond our ego, the more we rise above the illusion of life and death. This is the secret of immortality: to rise above the self, to merge with the eternal quality of bestowal, and to awaken to a life that is endless.
